These Kindergarten must haves for kids are the best way to get them excited for starting school. They will be feeling so prepared and ready!
Hi friends,
Well, as I’m writing this, it’s the last week of June and we finally got our paperwork for Kindergarten. We have a checklist of forms they need and while we’re getting everything ready on our end, I’m also starting to get everything ready on my daughters end too!
To be clear, I’ve been a stay at home mom my daughters entire life. She’s never gone to daycare of any form so all of this will be brand new to her.
Of course, we’ve discussed and mentioned how school is coming up and started talking more about what her days will look like. We’ve mentioned all the friends she’s going to make, all the playground equipment, all of the things she’s going to learn and more!
Still, she’s very nervous.
Since this past week was Amazon Prime Day, I decided to grab a few things that I hoped would get her more excited and less nervous. Today, I wanted to share those with you because.. it totally worked! She’s been wearing her backpack around all weekend talking about how she wishes school time would come sooner!
Praise the holy Amazon gods!
This post is all about Kindergarten must haves for school to get them excited & ready!
Kindergarten Must Haves For Kids
Books All About Kindergarten
The first of kindergarten must haves for kids? Books, of course! Probably much like you, we read books every night before bed. This is the perfect opportunity to create and have an open conversation about school. We love flipping through the pages and talking about what we think her school and days are going to be like!
This one is my daughters favorite out of the 3 books about Kindergarten we got for her.
Another one that she really liked! It’s in “Twas The Night Before Christmas” theme. She really thought this book was fun.. if I’m being honest though, I’m not sure if she liked the actual story or just because it reminded her of Christmas. Hey, whatever gets them excited right!?
On the First Day of Kindergarten
I’m going to list this one too simply because this is a book that I bought but I’m not gonna bullshit you. This book had my daughter bored by the 4th page. It’s set up like “The Twelve Days of Christmas” so of course it’s naturally very repetitive. Some books like “The Wonky Donkey” follow this same pattern and she loves it but this one was just not a hit with her!
A high quality, cute backpack
I’ve done too much research on backpacks that will hold up all school year long and possibly still even look nice enough to use the following year! This is what my search lead me to and now that I have one in my hands, I can see why.
This backpack is nice, nice. I mean, I’m considering ordering myself one too!
The snaps are really sturdy yet still easy for my daughter to open and close on her own. The fabric is water proof which is great! It’s so tough, the pins we ordered (more on that in a minute) were not going through. (I know its possibly though because someone in the reviews has pins on hers). Plus, It has just right amount of zippers and pockets that it’s useful without being overwhelming and confusing.
Overall, it really is such a nice backpack. I’ll be sure to update this post in 2022 to let you know how it holds up!
This is the exact color/style I ordered and her jaw dropped when I showed her! If you have a girly-girl, get this one! Alternatively, if you have a son (I have 2 younger boys as well – boys rule!)..
This one is really cute too! If I’m being honest, my oldest son loves pink (colors are for everyone!) so he would probably get the same one as my daughter. But, if your son isn’t into pink this, this one (blue/green) or even this one (red/blue) would be equally as adorable!
Fun backpack accessories
It’s really not enough to just have a cute backpack! Chances are, someone else is bound to have the same one. My daughter loves to decorate, like most 5 years olds do, so I knew I had to get her some fun accessories to “bling” out her new backpack!
I’m going to be listing the exact items I bought for my daughter as well as a couple other ones I think might be popular with other kids too!
Backpack Pins
Cute Enamel Brooch Pins for Backpacks
(these are the exact ones I bought)
25 PCS Cartoon Cute Backpack Pin
Backpack Charms
Holy shit, as I was gathering this link for the exact pom pom I bought I realized it says REAL rabbit fur! Yikes! We’re not vegan or anything but dang.. I don’t know, man. Anyway, this is the one we got.. I mean, it is really soft so……………. *hides* haha
Rainbow Key Chain Cotton Tassel
I went back and forth on this freaking adorable charm.. Actually, I still might buy it to let her change it up every once in a while. Too. Dang. Cute!
Leencum 5Pcs Mini Simple Fidget Toy
Remember when fidget spinners were all the rage!? Well, these are the latest fidget toy that every one is obsessed with! Pop its are fun! I’ll admit, even I find myself entertained by one haha
Instant Camera For Kindergarten Memories
Okay, how in the world is this one of the Kindergarten must haves for kids, you ask? Because.. we’re making a school memory scrapbook this year! I plan on doing an entire blog post series on this and updating it as we go through the year so be on the look out!
My daughter already knows all about this scrapbook I’m putting together. It’s going to be adorable.. It’s going to have flaps, pockets, photos, artwork, everything!
While she won’t be taking this to school with her, we do plan on using it for great photo opportunities like the first/last day of school, spirit week, holiday parties like valentine’s day, etc!
I bought an extra pack of film so that she can take a few photos this summer too for her own personal collection. She’s super stoked about the scrapbook so getting this was very exciting for her!
Fujifilm instax Mini 9 Instant Camera
A letter board for first day of school photos
Similar to the last item, this isn’t really something she’ll be taking to school with her but it’s still fun!
I know you’ve seen the millions of first day of school photos with letter boards. They’re super popular and trendy just like the chalk board photos!
We already had this from when I did my sons birth announcement but I decided to give this to her now so that she can use it in her room this summer.
Bento Box For The Best Lunches
Ahh, probably one of my favorite Kindergarten must haves for kids – lunch boxes! I’m 1000% that mom who cannot wait to make cute little bento box lunches.
I went back and forth between the Bentgo box and the Yumbox and eventually landed on Bentgo.
First, I don’t own a Yumbox so I cant speak for a fact but after watching videos it doesn’t seem as sturdy. Secondly, it only comes in solid colors (at least that I could find). I really wanted something cute and fun for her to be excited over. The Bentgo offers so many different cute prints. Finally, it was on sale for Prime Day so…. haha
We ended up ordering 3 for all of the kids and they all (minus the baby) were extremely excited about them and wanted to eat dinner out of it! They are very cute and feel super sturdy/weighted (not heavy but do you know what I mean? They feel.. solid). The lids clasp isn’t flimsy.. overall, seem like they will hold up!
We plan to use this box during the summer for zoo trips and such so I’ll definitely update this with my honest opinion on the box after I’ve used it for a bit.

Back To School Bracelet To Calm The Nerves
So, Amazon realized what I was up to and started recommended things LOL. I spotted these adorable mommy and me back to school bracelets!
I was actually thinking of a way to do something like this. I knew a mini stuffed animal would be too much, I considered painting a “special” rock that she could rub and think of me, etc. When I saw this though I knew it was perfect!
I haven’t given this one to her yet. I don’t plan to give it to her until the morning of the first day. I know she’s going to love it! She really enjoys having little reminders of people she loves.
