These 12 kids room organization tips are the secrets to how to keep your child’s room clean and organized!
Hi friends,
Let’s talk about your kid room!
If you struggle with keeping their room clean, tidy and organized, you’re not alone!
Luckily, there’s a few things you can do to help make their room a more functional space. These kids room organization tips will not only help you, but also help your child enjoy their room more!
This post is all about kids room organization tips to help keep your child’s room clean and organized!
How To Keep Your Child’s Room Clean
1. Give them enough storage spaces
Organization is all about giving things a proper home!
Take a look around your kids room and make there’s ample spaces for everything.
Kids are always finding new things they enjoy which also means there’s always new things they suddenly need space for.
For example, shortly after my daughter turned 5 she found a new love for making clothes for her dolls. She got a kids sewing machine for Christmas a month later and quickly grew a stock pile of fabric and other supplies.
All of her current storage was taken up. We needed to rethink her organization systems and find a new home for all of her supplies because the top of her dresser was being swallowed.
This is a prime example of why making sure your kid has enough organization room for new interest is important. We learned that lesson and now try to keep at least two spots open for her next “thing”.
3. Declutter often
Speaking of new “things”, decluttering is also an important key to keeping a room clean!
As mentioned previously, kids are growing and changing all the time! When they pick up a new hobby or interest you’ll notice older interests slowly but surely fade away.
Going through your kids room with them every so often is a great opportunity to talk about what they’re into these days and what they might be ready to move on from. You can talk with them about how clearing out things that they don’t use as often opens up so much more room for their newest interest.
Side note: I highly discourage any parents from doing this on their own.
Always involve your child and come to a mutual agreement first. I understand the mess can become overwhelming and as parents we can get into a “I just wanna throw everything away” mood (trust me, been there!) but working with your child will help give them the proper tools they need to understand the importance of organization as they get older!
2. Make sure things are accessible
As part of the short girls club, I understand the importance of accessibility first hand! Lol!
One of the most frustrating things ever is trying to clean up and put something away but not being able to reach where it belongs. I’m sure this is even worse for kids!
Be mindful of how you set up your kids space and make sure you’re setting things up for them, not you.
This could mean laying the cube organizer horizontally instead of vertically, putting the bookshelves by their bed so they can stand up on it and reach or even just even keeping a step stool in their closet so they can hang up their own clothes.
3. Don’t overcomplicate things
I probably sound like a broken record with this tip but it’s sooo important!
If you’re a Pinterest addict like me and love all the aesthetically pleasing organizing ideas like the color sorted legos, listen up! Yeah, you.
Don’t do it. Keep things simple.
I get it, it looks pretty. The barbie shoes all paired up in their own compartment might seem like it makes sense to you but I repeat, don’t do it!
This is a huge organization mistake many parents make but I’m telling you, all it’s going to do is set everyone up to be frustrated with each other! Your child does not want to spend 30 minutes sorting legos by color every time they need to pick up their room, don’t do that to them.
Once your child is older, if they want to get nitty gritty with their organization then by all means, help them out and let them! But until they express this to you, just keep things simple.

4. Set clear expectations
Lastly, communication and clear expectations are what keep an entire home happy!
Have you ever tried to just tell your kid to “go clean your room” and then they walk out 15 minutes later saying they’re done? You go in there all they’ve done is throw away some trash put their clothes in the dirty hamper.. completely ignoring their unmade bed, the hoarding corner of toys and their latest artwork spread out all over their dresser?
Yeah, same.
Instead, let’s make sure we’re giving them clear expectations and instructions. This should include daily expectations and clear instructions on smaller tasks as well.
Daily expectations:
- Make bed in the morning before coming out for breakfast
- Bring laundry basket to laundry room Saturday night
- Hang up clean clothes on Sunday morning
- Put all school supplies back into your backpack before bed
Smaller expectations might include taking a peak into their room before clean up time and giving them a summary of what needs to be picked up. This will help them have a place to start and a way to keep focus on the task at hand when it seems overwhelming.
Clear instructions:
- Throw away the trash on your desk
- Fix the barbie house so that things aren’t spilling out of it
- Put your books back on the shelf
- Pick up the stuffed animals off the floor and back on your bed
Kids Room Organization Tips & Ideas
1. Cube organizers
Cube organizers, cube organizers, cube organizers!
If for some odd reason you don’t already have these in your home, you need them!
These are a perfect place to start when it comes to your kids room organization system. They’re just great! Lay it horizontally and use the top as a “shelf”, pick a few bins with label cards so that everyone can easily know what goes where and you’re off to a great start!

2. Keep a step stool handy
Like we talked about earlier, accessibility is so important when it comes to giving your kids the confidence and tools to maintain their room!
If you don’t already keep a step stool in your kids room, I definitely recommend it!
Everything in your child’s room should be safe for them to reach and access. I know when my daughter was super young there were some things in her room I’d put up high that I didn’t want her to get down or touch without me but as they grow older we really just need to find a new space outside of their room for these things.

3. Add hooks in their room
Hooks are amazing for kids room organization!
There so many uses for hook in a kid room, it’s definitely a must.
You can hang jackets, jewelry, small baskets, clothes for the next day, bags, backpacks, hats, so many things!
Hooks are overall just a great way to get things up and off the floor. Just make sure you hang hooks well within reach of the child!

4. Utilize under the bed storage
Under the bed storage is the best!
If you’re not already utilizing under the bed for toy storage, you need to!
This is actually where almost all of my daughters barbie things live. We keep her barbies, barbie accessories and barbie motor vehicles (airplane, ambulance, cars, campers, the dang works!) under there and it’s absolutely the best place for them!
We use simple clear storage bins to hold the smaller items and they’re all neatly tucked under there just perfectly!
If you have the opportunity to purchase a bed with built in storage, I would definitely jump on that! I so regret that we didn’t buy that option when we purchased our daughters bed!

5. Give your child an art work display
Do you have a crafty kid?
If so, you probably have tons and tons of papers and mini crafts laying all around your kids room!
Give them a way to display their artwork and creations. Not only will they be able to enjoy their work better but this will also help limit “clutter”! (I hate to call kids artwork clutter but you know what I mean)
Once the display is full, they’ll need to retire any older artwork pieces to make room for their latest creations.

6. Keep a donate bin in your child’s room
This tip changed my life, I swear!
Okay, maybe that’s dramatic but honestly, this is my favorite! If you have more than one kid you know the pain of the constant cycle of clothes and toys. This takes one less thing off your plate!
Keep a large donate bin in your kids closet and let them add to it as they need to. Explain to them that if they outgrow either a toy or a clothing item they can just throw it in there until it’s full.
Once the basket is full simply go through it, wash and clean off what can be donated and donate.
7. Set up a chore chart

Lastly, put a chore chart in their room for easy reference!
This goes all the way back to the topic of setting clear expectations. If they know what’s expected of them on a daily/weekly basis it will make everything so much easier!
As adults, I know most of us love making checklists of what need to be done and being able to physically mark them off as we go is so satisfying! Having a chore chart or checklist is the perfect way for kids to keep track of what needs to be done and stay focused.
