Here are 7 easy little girl hairstyles for school that are fast and simple but still adorable!
Hi friends,
Coming up with easy little girl hairstyles for school that don’t take all morning but still look cute can be a challenge at times. Mornings are always hectic and no one wants to spend 20 minutes on a hairstyle every morning!
These little girl hairstyles ideas are some of my daughters favorites that she always asks for. There aren’t any crazy zig zags or anything super complicated.
Most of these girl hairstyles we do right at the breakfast table while she eats. Some of them are braids but I’ll be sure to include the exact videos I watched to learn. I promise, they’re very easy to pick up on!
Easy Little Girl Hairstyles For School
Before we start, I’ll be completely honest. I don’t stress over perfectly clean lines for hair. Even the simplest of hairstyles can end up taking forever if you’re worrying about having clean lines. If you look at other the kids at drop off/pick up, you’ll probably notice many of them don’t have perfect lines either. It’s really not worth stressing over, these hairstyles are still just as cute without being perfect.
1. French braids to pigtails
First up, a cute twist on a classic hairstyle – pigtails!
Simply divide the hair in half and do two French braids up to the peak of their head. Then, finish off the braids as normal braids, gather the rest of the hair and pull into two pigtails. Add two cute bows that match the outfit and you’re done!
If you’ve never done a French braid before, this is a great tutorial video!
2. Bubble Ponytail
Next, this super trendy and fun ponytail!
First, gather hair at the crown of your child’s head for a small top pony. Then, take two sections of hair from each side directly below that section. Add those two sections to the tail of the pony above. Tie together. Now you should have two pony tails combined into one. Next, simply grab the chuck of hair between the two elastics and using two thumbs under the pony, gently spread the hair. Repeat these steps all the way down.
Be careful not make the sections of hair between the elastics too big. Keep them closer together because they will naturally slip down as you spread the hair to make the bubble effect. If you make the sections too big the bubble will simply fall flat.
Here’s the video I watched to learn how to do this. Super easy to follow!
3. Dutch braid pigtails
If you already know how to French braid, dutch braids are basically the exact same thing just opposite. It’s super easy, especially to do on someone else (I’ll admit, my hands still confused when I do it on myself but on other people its super easy!)
To start, you should probably know how to do a basic braid first. The main difference here is you’re doing an “underhand” braid instead. So instead of adding your stand of hair over the middle section, you’ll be passing it under that strand.
Once you know how to do an underhand braid (super easy), the rest is exactly like a French braid where you add a strand of hair to each section that you pass under the middle section. Continue all the way down till you get to the nape of the neck. At this point all that’s left is to do a simple braid all the way down and tie it off.
Here’s another great video that easy explains a dutch braid
4. Dutch braid to pigtails
Once you have your dutch braid down, this is a cute variant of the exact same thing!
Split the hair into two sections, start your dutch braid all the down to the nape of the neck. Next, instead of finishing off the braid, simply tie it off and let the rest of the hair flow. Repeat on the other side. Finally, add two bows for a cute touch.
5. Mini French braid
Okay this one seriously takes less than 2 minutes!
First, grab a small section of hair on one side. Next, start your French braid and continue down till right above the top of the ear. Finish off as a normal braid and tie off. Add a headband to keep the braid back and out of the face. That’s it!
6. Bubble braid to pigtails
Fair warning, this hairstyle does require a few elastics but its super easy and great if you’re struggling with dutch braids.
First, start by dividing the hair into two sections down the middle. Gather a small section of hair and pull into a pony. Next, directly below that, grab another small section and make another pony. Then, split the top pony in half and flip the bottom pony up and out of the way. With the split pony in hands, grab two sections of hair from directly below. Adding these stands of hair to your split pony, gather all of the hair and tie it off into a single pony.
Next, split your top pony, flip the new bottom pony up and out of the way and repeat the process. The larger of sections you grab the less times you have to repeat the process. Once you reach the nap of the neck, simply tie it off and leave the rest of the hair hanging as ponytails.
Once again, I’ll link a video here since this one is a bit hard to explain via text
7. Two dutch braids to ponytail
Last up, a cute touch to an otherwise simple ponytail!
First, part the hair as you would normally part it. Create two small dutch braids that stop right at or just below the peak of the crown of the head. Meet the two braids in the middle and gather the rest of the hair that’s still below. Brush upwards to smooth out the hair on the bottom and gather everything into a pony. Finish with a cute bow and that’s it!
Girl Hairstyles For School Essentials
These are all optional of course but here are the exact products I used in this post for these 7 easy little girls hairstyles for school.
1. Hairbows
40 Pieces Girls Hair Bows Clips
These bows are great. We absolutely love them! They have like 4 shades of pink which is nice if your daughter is anything like mine and wears pink the most. The clips are nice and sturdy and stay up all day. Great value with lots of variety for the price!
2. Headbands
These too, are the exact headbands we have! Again, I have nothing negative to say about them. I like that they’re solid and not wrapped so the color doesn’t “fall off” like some headbands. They have a matte finish to them and are sturdy with teeth that allow for a good grip. These bows come in beautiful, minimalist colors while still being pretty and fun!
3. Small Elastic Hair Ties
Elastics are a must, of course. We like these ones. I’m not kidding when I say this, I’ve never broken a single one while trying to use them. Never. Not once. It’s kinda crazy.. I’m one of those people who will stretch a tie out so much that way I can tie it around a million times and make sure it’s super secure. These are haven’t snapped on me once. Plus, I like that they come in a “jar” container instead of a bag.
Note: If your daughter has lighter hair I’d suggest picking up the clear ones
4. Hair Tie Cutters
3 Pcs Elastic Hair Bands Remover Cutter
If you don’t have elastic cutters, you need them! These make life so much easier at the end of the day when it’s dinner and bath time and you have zero patience left. Just make sure you don’t try to cut the entire elastic because you might grab and cut some hair along with it. Hook and cut just a single piece of the elastic to avoid this.
