Hi friends,
I don’t know about you, but we are still undecided on how we’re going to be spending our halloween night this year. I know many people are choosing to stay inside and not take their littles trick or treating this year so I wanted to make a list of ideas for a fun night in. Many of our kids have missed out so much this year from play dates, sports, activities, school, promotions and graduations.. Let’s not add the magic of Halloween to that list too! If you’re looking for ways to keep the spooky spirit alive, I have a couple ideas for you!
1. Halloween Egg hunt
Breakout the easter box and bring the plastic eggs back out! If you want to be able to reuse the eggs next Easter but still spooky-ify the hunt, consider adding mini glow sticks to the eggs to make a glow in the dark hunt! If you want to pick up new plastic eggs or don’t mind buying new ones next spring, grab a sharpie and draw cute little faces on the eggs. Amazon even has a few cute options for pre-spooky halloween eggs!
2. Halloween Candy Scavenger Hunt
Another fun option for finding Halloween treats is having a scavenger hunt! While I’m not super creative when it comes to riddles, there are tons of options on Pinterest.. I’ll link a few of my favorites for you!
3. Spooky themed dinner/breakfast
Make it a family event to whip up something fun and festive for dinner. A healthy option like chili stuffed jack-o-lantern bell peppers to semi-healthy jack-o-lantern quesadillas to classic junk food fun like a pumpkin shaped pizza! A few pizza places like Papa Johns even offer pumpkin shaped pizzas for pick up if you want an easy, no effort, no dishes dinner.
4. Face paint fun
What kid doesn’t love getting face paint?? You dont even need to be an artist to rock some of these easy and festive looks! I found this awesome face paint kit online from Amazon that even includes Halloween (& Christmas, etc) stencils for easy designs! (click the image to see more info)
5. Halloween themed snacks and treats
If you have some extra time and like to get creative in the kitchen there are endless options for snacks, treats & side dishes you can make. If you’re like me and not super talented when it comes to putting together elaborate dishes like a veggie platter that looks like a skull, there are also easy, simple options as well like simply drawing some ghost eyes on a cheese stick or drawing a jack-o-lantern onto a few clementines.
Last year these were a favorite with my then-three year old. Super easy monster popcorn balls!
5. Movie night
Monster popcorn balls are the perfect movie night companion.. Halloween (and Christmas) have inspired some of the best movies! A few of my not-too-spooky favorites include Hocus Pocus, Monster House, Nightmare Before Christmas, Casper and of course Addams Family Values!
6. Dress up in costumes
If even you’re staying in, dressing up is a must! Kid’s love seeing their parents join in on the fun too so make sure you do something, even if its just a simple homemade last minute costume like a a black dress & a Witch Hat or overalls and a Cute Floppy Hat and scarecrow make up or maybe just an old bed sheet with two holes as a ghost!
7. Carve/Decorate pumpkins contest
We normally carve our pumpkins about a week before halloween so that we can enjoy them on our front porch for a little before they start to rot but hosting a pumpkin carving contest the night of would be fun too! If your littles are too young to carve on their own or you just don’t want the mess, there’s always Pumpkin Decorating Stickers for a mess-free but still fun time!
8. Cookie Decorating
A tradition mainly for Christmas but halloween cookies are just as fun & equally yummy!
9. Halloween Candy Piñata
Did you know this a thing? I had no clue! A family member brought down an adorable handmade piñata for the kids to whack at and they absolutely loved it! Turns out its definitely a thing, they even sell pre-made ones at Party City.. I’ll link a couple for you!

10. Boo Pong
A fun and kid-friendly spooky twist on beer pong. Find some cute plastic Halloween cups from the dollar tree & some ping pong balls. Older kiddos will love this! Make sure to lay down a tarp first or take it outside.
11. Pumpkin Ring Toss
So many different ways you could go about this one! Use pumpkins, witches hats, cones painted as candy corn, soda bottles wrapped in toilet paper like mummies. Endless options! Use glow stick necklaces to make it a fun after dark activity!
12. Halloween Science Experiments
Why not be a well rounded parent and throw in some science? Do I hear a smartest parent ever award? Definitely! Haha jokes aside, even if they don’t actually learn a single thing they’ll still have fun 🙂
The halloween fun & activities are truly endless.. I hope you and your family have a safe & happy Halloween!
