Going into the first day of kindergarten is such a huge moment for our kids. Start the year out on a high note with these 10 easy ways to make the first day of kindergarten so special for your child!
Hi friends,
I can’t believe it’s almost here! The very first day of kindergarten!
Wow, what a huge milestone for everyone. Nerves and anticipation are definitely at an all time high. This is a big day!
So, we want to kick things off on a high note and make it truly the best day ever! Here are some simple and fun ideas to add a little excitement to your kids first day!
This post is all about how to make the first day of kindergarten special for your child!
Ways To Make The 1st Day of Kindergarten Special
The night before..
1. Pick out a special first day outfit
First things first, a shiny new outfit! If you have a little fashionista, they will probably have fun picking out their own unique outfit. If they’re a bit more relaxed about their clothes, then finding a special school-related shirt is a fun idea!
2. Pack a school themed lunch
One of the ways we got my daughter more excited about starting kindergarten was getting her an adorable mermaid bento lunch box. Packing the cutest little school themed lunch would be a such a fun surprise come lunchtime! Throw in a little love note and you’re guaranteed to make your new kindergartener smile.
3. Read a book about kindergarten together
We’ve been reading so many different books about school life and kindergarten recently. The Kissing Hand is such a classic and the perfect book to read the night before to calm some nerves. If you don’t already have this book, be prepared. It will make you cry thinking about how grown and brave your little one is becoming!
4. Set up a special breakfast tablescape
I saw this idea while scrolling on Pinterest and immediately knew I just had to do this! What a perfect way to start this big day! Also, it definitely doesn’t have to be some huge set up to be cute! Streamers, a poster, school themed paper plate/cups or even just a few balloon are super easy ways to make it a memorable breakfast!

5. Make time for a fun hairstyle to boost their confidence
Even for us momma, there’s just something about having your hair done right that gives you the confidence to take on the world! Same seems to be true for our kids. My daughter and son both act brand new when I do their hair. They love it. Sending your kiddo to school looking and feeling their best is a must for a successful first day!
6. Serve a school themed breakfast
A school or even “K” themed breakfast would be the perfect addition to that adorable breakfast set up you prepared the night before! A simple K shaped waffle, an apple & some eggs would make such a quick, easy & fun breakfast.
7. Take a traditional first day of school photo
If your little one didn’t attend preschool you’re probably so eager for that first day of school photo.. At least, I know I am. I have this fear that in the hustle and bustle of the morning I’m going to forget!
We’re going with a letter board over a chalkboard personally because hopefully they will still take these photos in middle/high school for their momma. I know they won’t want to be holding a chalkboard sign that boldly says “I am 13 years old!”, their favorite color & what they want to be when they grow up LOL

8. Give them something to help shake the nerves
While doing some major Prime Day shopping for a few school items, this popped up as a suggestion! I was actually already thinking of a way to do something similar to this but couldn’t decide on exactly what. When I saw this I knew it was perfect!
Their first of kindergarten is huge step for any kid, especially if this is their first time at school ever. Having a reminder of you (..and you a reminder of them, as if you weren’t going to be thinking about them all day anyway haha) is such a simple way to offer them major comfort during their day.
After School..
9. Plan for a mini after school treat
After such a huge day everyone deserves a little treat for making it through and totally rocking it! Take your big kindergartener for a mini treat date after school as a way to congratulate her on a successful first day.
A quick ice cream date or having a couple cute cookies ready for them will mean the world to them!
10. Have them review their first day with you
I know many people do a “first day of school” questionnaires before they head off but I wanted one for after school. This way, we can really get a solid picture of how they were truly feeling and how it went for them.
So, I put together this “review sheet” (or “questionnaire” or whatever you wanna call it) for exactly that!
This is intended to be filled out mainly by the child but with parent involvement, of course. I know they will enjoy circling things, checking off choices, filling in bubbles and drawing as they reflect on their day and tell you all about it!
This would make an absolute perfect keepsake to store away and look back on one day 🙂
